What can I do for your school?
What does your school need? All workshops and other services provided by Karen Hickland and Science Matters are tailored to meet the needs of each individual client. Not sure what you need or want? Listed below you will find some ideas, one of which may resonate with your needs. If none of these ideas are quite what you're looking for, please contact me with your thoughts and I will do everything possible to make it happen.

Teacher Workshops
Try a hands-on workshop to excite and inspire your teachers to incorporate new activities and methods into their science lessons. Teachers will complete concrete exercises, just as their students would, that can be simply included in their classes as soon as the following day. The workshop parameters are up to you: a whole day workshop, an afternoon workshop, or a series of after school workshops. Do you want to focus on a single curriculum area or a variety of topics? A single grade-level or a cross-section of the school? The one requirement: the workshop attendees WILL be active participants... no sitting around, just "putting in the time"!

Student Lessons
Invite a guest instructor into your classrooms to add some spark to your students' day and model new science lessons for the classroom teachers. Make it a one time occurrence or a recurring event (once a month, the start of each new unit) your students and teachers eagerly anticipate. The classroom teacher must remain with the class throughout the lesson.

Curriculum Design
Looking to spice up your curriculum? Provide a list of topics covered in your science curriculum and in return you'll receive a package of labs, activities, and games that can easily be incorporated into your daily science lessons to bring about greater interest and excitement, for both students and teachers. Try out this service for a single unit that feels a bit drab - you'll be so pleased with the results, you'll soon be ready to revamp the rest of the curriculum.

Science Olympiad
Looking to provide your students with some science enrichment opportunities? I'll mentor one of your staff members throughout the process of forming a Science Olympiad team, preparing and coaching that team, and competing at the regional level. Check out the Science Olympiad website for more information on this organization and see if it might be just the thing you were looking for.

Science Camp
More science enrichment opportunities! I'll work with your staff to design a science camp (a week-long vacation camp, a series of after-school mini-camps, or a summer camp) that works for you. I may also be available to help implement the program as well.
